HRDS General Class Descriptions
Please Note that not all HRDS Classes are offered during the Mini Sessions
Creative Ballet (20mos-2 years old)-
This is a great class to get your child started in dancing. This introductory class helps young dancers to develop their motor skills and learn elementary ballet steps while having fun! (45min/week class)
Ballet/Tap Combo (3-4 years old)-This is a perfect class for the beginner dancer. With a half hour of tap and a half
hour of ballet they get a strong beginning start to the two most basic genres of dance while learning class room etiquette, motor skills, balance, etc. (45 min/week class)
Acro/Hip Hop Combo (age 3-4yrs)-
This class will offer 30mins of acro and 30mins of hip hop to introduce young dancers to many foundational principles of dance. Dancers will learn basic acro skills while improving body strength, control and flexibility. Hip hop basics will be incorporated to help students learn isolations, coordination and musicality. (45 min/week class)
Ballet/Tap/Jazz Combo(age 4yrs)- This is a great class for someone who has had some experience with ballet and tap. In this class, we will offer 20mins of ballet, 20mins of tap, and 20mins of jazz. This class will work on building coordination, rhythm, and introducing basic principles of 3 foundational dance styles: ballet, tap and jazz. (This is a 1hour/week class)
Ballet (ages 5 & up) – The foundation of all dance forms. This course allows students to develop the fundamentals of dance through control, poise, precision, fluency and grace using the
technique and style of classical ballet. Students will learn ballet vocabulary through barre and center work while building strength and flexibility. Students who are serious about improving as dancers will find that ballet classes are an important part of their training. (45 min/week class)
Tap (ages 5 & up) –
This course is upbeat, fun, and energetic. In its beginning levels it will teach children basic rhythms and sounds. As the child progresses, the class will challenge students to recognize beats and rhythms that are not always so specific. (This is a 30min/week class
Jazz (age 5 & up) –
A course designed to introduce students to basic skills of jazz dance with emphasis on general body technique and development, rhythm awareness, jazz styles, and rhythmic combinations of movement. This class will also work on the “skills” in dance (that are found in dance team routines) such as leaps, turns, kicks, etc. This is the form of dance that is most commonly seen and recognized. Must be enrolled in ballet to take jazz. (This is a 45min/week class and must be paired with a ballet)
Acro (age 5 and up)-
This class concentrates on the acro skills that can be found in cheerleading, gymnastics and dance. Body strength, control and flexibility will improve as students learn to go head over heels! (This is a 45 min/week class and DOES perform in the end of the year recital)
Hip-Hop (age 5 & up) –
A high-energy class that uses the latest sounds in rap, R&B and pop music together with movements influenced by some of today’s hottest video choreographers. Hip hop encompasses movement that has elements of poppin’, locking, and breaking as well as freestyle movement to give students the opportunity to develop their own sense of style. Hip hop is urban, it’s street, and it’s diverse and forever changing. (This is a 30-45min/week class)
Lyrical/Contemporary (age 10 & up) –
This class is catered to the dancer who is wanting to take their dancing to another level. Lyrical/Contemporary takes the principles learned in ballet/jazz and brings in different performance aspects, focusing on telling a story through dancing. To register for this class, dancers must be enrolled in ballet and jazz, and must have 3 years of dance experience. (This is a 45min/week class)
Leaps and Turns (age 5 and up) –
This class is a great way for young dancers to develop skills such as leaps and turns. This is a non-recital dance, and the entire class will be spent on learning new skills! The skills learned in this class will be above and beyond what is taught in a regular ballet or jazz class, allowing dancers to grow at a quicker rate! (This is a 45min/week class)
Intro to Dance –This is a perfect class for the dancer who wants to try it a little bit of everything before committing to a long term session. This class will include basic principles of ballet, jazz and hip hop. This class will only be offered in mini sessions.
Recreational Competition Classes (5 and up) –
Our Recreational Competition Classes allow dancers ages 5-9 and 10 and up to experience one or two competitions a year, without the commitment of our competition team. Dancers will be required, at minimum, to be enrolled in ballet and jazz, with some additional requirements based on age. These classes can be added upon enrollment and do not require an evaluation.
HRDS Competition Team (advanced dancers ages 6 and up) –
Advanced performance & competition team for HRDS. This program will help improve your performance level by participating in technical classes, and many performances in festivals, competitions, professional and non professional sporting events, etc throughout the entire season. The Competition Team will be featured in all recitals. For more information look under our Programs Tab. Placement for this team is determined by evaluation.
